Dj Spyro

He’s argubly the best Dj in the grime and he’s also a highly rated producer.

Dj Spyro talks work ethics, Influences and what it takes to be a top dj.

R: So, word is, you’re the best grime DJ on road… what are your thoughts?

S: Well I wouldn’t say I was the best out there because there are a lot of good DJ’s around such as Maxi Mash, Vectra, Logan Sama, Mak 10 etc But I’d like to think I know how to entertain a crowd.

R: You’re one of the most ‘technically gifted’ DJ’s around, now explain that to someone who doesn’t DJ and doesn’t understand the technical side… surely you just have to drop some bangers?

S: Being technical has nothing to do with dropping bangers because anyone can drop tunes. Being technical means locking yourself in a room and learning new things on your turntables / CDJ’s and carrying out your practice in a rave or on radio.

R: Were your parent’s musical? Is that where some influence came from?

S: My Dad was into music when I was a young’un and I used to watch him make tunes and just sit back and take everything in.

R:Why did you start dj’ing – were you influenced back in the day by anyone in particular?

S:I started mixing because I wanted to be someone to look up to, the same way I used to look up to EZ.

R: What would you say to young people who want to DJ? How’s the best way to start mixing?

The best way to start mixing I would say is to start from scratch, best way to learn in my opinion.

S: What’s the best way to carve out your individuality as a DJ?

You have to be unique or you’ll just sound like everyone else..

R: Do you prefer mixing grime or funky? Do you find there are different vibes in grime and funky raves?

S: Mixing grime and funky is very different as in they’re two different tempo’s. Funky is a kind of smoother style and grime is more up tempo and more creative with the beats.

R: Who are your favourite producers?

S: Maniac, DOK, Bless Beats, Terror, Skepta, JME…

R: You produce too, right? Some people don’t release that, would you rather be known as a producer or a DJ?

S: I would rather be known as both to be honest because they’re both within the music genre I play and listen to, but if I had to pick, it would be a DJ. I like being able to play all the tunes I know people want to hear.

R: Which beat do you wish you’d produced yourself (any, past or present)
Know We – Wiley

S: Rinse FM is a big station, is that your home now for the foreseeable future? When can people hear your set or download it?

R: Yeah Rinse is my home! You can hear me live on Rinse FM every Saturday 7-9pm or if you miss it, you can download the show on www.rinse.fm

S: Do you believe in the hard work ethic? I heard an interview with you where you said its annoying when people come up from nowhere and put out air… do you feel that way because you yourself grinded hard to get where you are now?

R: Defo. It’s hard trying to get up there in the music game. You get knocked back a few times, but as they say, practice makes perfect… So for someone that has hardly any knowledge of the music and can only see the pound signs is wrong. You have to have love for the music.

S: Did you ever experience any negativity on the come up?
100% but all I can say is, look at me now! There were people who have given me negativity and now they’ve fallen off.

R: Who do you think are the producers and MC’s to watch in 2009?

S: Maniac and DOK are on fire right now and always will be but there’s one man that’s making fire and his name is Little Silva. Look out for him…
